The Department of Sociology at the University of California at Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach a range of courses in the department should openings arise; applicants are considered as needs arise, and the existence of the pool does not guarantee that a position is available. Duties cover undergraduate and graduate teaching, and may also include managing graders and graduate student instructors, holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials such as a syllabus, maintaining a course website and writing exams. Appointments run from 8.5 percent to 100 percent time for semesters or summer sessions, usually starting in July or August for the fall semester and in January for the spring. Applicants need an advanced degree, or enrolment in an advanced degree program, at the time of application; a PhD or equivalent international degree at the time of appointment is preferred, along with the ability to support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment and pedagogy. The application asks for a CV, statement of teaching, cover letter, sample or course syllabi, recent teaching evaluations and three to five references, and the estimated salary range is $70,977 to $95,388. The department typically reviews applications in February and March for fall course needs and in September for spring and summer needs; review of applications began on 31 July 2026 and the window stays open until the final date of 16 July 2027. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire, and visa sponsorship is not available.
