The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach undergraduate courses in anthropology under the direction of the department chair. The department seeks instructors whose area of expertise complements current strengths in archaeology (pre-colonial and early post-colonial history of Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas), biological anthropology (molecular anthropology, human ecology and forensic anthropology, including paleoanthropology, skeletal biology and bioarchaeology), or cultural anthropology (race and ethnicity, medicine, health, science, gender, sexuality, environment, religion, law, popular culture, politics, economics and institutions). An M.A./M.S. or equivalent foreign degree in anthropology, archaeology or a related field is required, together with evidence of university-level teaching experience; applications need a CV, cover letter, teaching statement and three confidential letters of reference. A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $8,872 to $11,576 based on salary points 1 to 10, and compensation for Summer Session courses may vary. Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year and may also fall in Summer Session; this recruitment is valid for initial appointments from fall quarter 2026 through fall quarter 2027. The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses, and internal candidates are given priority consideration. Review of applications began on 17 July 2026 and applications are accepted until 6 August 2027.
