The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in Folklore and Socio-Cultural Anthropology should an opening arise; applications are accepted and reviewed according to department needs, and the existence of the pool does not guarantee an available position. The department is especially interested in anthropologists and folklorists who can teach one or two undergraduate courses in a topical field of their expertise or courses satisfying upper-division major requirements and electives in socio-cultural anthropology, with particular interest in post-communist transformations in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe; language, culture and society; and medical anthropology. Beyond teaching, general duties may include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials, writing exams, and managing GSIs. A PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrollment in such a program at the time of application, is required; a PhD in Anthropology or Folklore by the start date and prior teaching experience are preferred. Applications require a CV, cover letter, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and a sample syllabus for each proposed course, plus two references. Positions may range from 33% to 67% time, equivalent to one or two courses per semester, with a stated full-time range of $70,977-$199,722. The most recent review date was February 26, 2026, and applications are accepted until February 11, 2027.
