§ I·Posting Excerpt

UC Santa Cruz's History of Consciousness Department maintains an ongoing lecturer pool for instructors who may be appointed to teach courses in and across five advertised subject areas: philosophy and theory; race and ethnicity; gender and sexuality; political economy and social movements; and media, aesthetics and poetics. Candidates must be willing to teach both seminars and large lecture courses. A Master's degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree) in a field relating to one of the advertised subject areas, plus demonstrated teaching experience in higher education in one or more of those areas, is required at the time of application. Applications call for a teaching statement, one or two sample undergraduate syllabi, two sets of teaching evaluations, a writing sample of up to 25 pages, and two to five confidential letters of reference; internal candidates are given priority consideration. The posting gives a reasonable estimate of $8,872-$24,965 for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course, with percent time varying by course load. The recruitment opened June 17, 2026 and is valid for initial appointments from fall quarter 2026 through fall quarter 2027; the most recent review date was July 17, 2026 and applications are accepted until the final date of August 6, 2027.
