The Department of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is building a pool of non-tenure track adjunct faculty members who can teach one or two on-campus, in-person courses during the Spring 2027 semester or future academic terms, with the possibility of additional courses depending on funding, departmental instructional need and candidate availability. Potential courses include large introductory courses, statistics, and specialized courses in the areas of race and racism, deviance and gender. The workload consists of teaching undergraduate sociology courses, mentoring and advising undergraduates, maintaining FERPA certification each semester, contacting the Department Chair within 24 hours with student concerns, and checking and responding to university email within 24 business hours. Candidates must hold a PhD in Sociology or a related field, or a master's with commensurate professional experience, and successful candidates will demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work with diverse populations and experience mentoring undergraduates. Applications require a letter of interest identifying subject teaching areas, a CV or resume and three professional references. The stated total salary is $8,195 per course and the work location is Amherst. Applications are reviewed until positions are filled; a teaching assignment is not guaranteed, and assignments may not be offered in the order candidates enter the pool, since openings for different classes occur at different times.
