The Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach during the academic year or Summer Session. The department seeks professionally active and versatile teachers whose pedagogy is grounded in critical analysis of race and ethnicity and who are conversant with recent trends in ethnic studies, and asks candidates to be willing to develop syllabi that engage racial capitalism and the intersection of race and ethnicity with categories such as gender, sexuality, class, disability, indigeneity, law and citizenship. Proposed course topics are open across areas including comparative approaches to race, ethnicity and indigeneity, critical adoption studies, critical migration and comparative border studies, critical prison studies, critical science and technology studies, disability studies, environmental studies, histories of decolonizing and anticolonial social movements, indigenous studies, labor studies, mixed-race studies, queer studies, settler colonial studies, transgender studies, and war and empire studies. Lecturers should be willing to teach in both large lecture and smaller seminar formats. A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $9,986-$13,420. The most recent review date was 17 July 2026 and applications continue to be accepted until 6 August 2027. Internal candidates are given priority consideration, and the hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses.
